When I say stock photography, do you immediately think “ew”?

If you do, you aren’t alone.

But there’s a lot more to stock photography than cheesy grins these days.

In today’s post, I’ll cover where to find the good stuff.

First, the golden rule of stock photos

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LICENSE!!!

You can’t use images on the internet without making sure you have the proper license, or you may face legal fines. Read the licenses for any images you download to ensure you use them correctly.

TANGENT: Why Pinterest is not a good place to look for photos

I love Pinterest. It’s an amazing resource for inspiration. However, the photos you find there may not be free to use. So you might fall in love with a photo, only to find out it costs $500 to license.

Instead, use the sites below!

Best sites to find stock photos for your counseling website

Best Free Stock Photo Sites

*All royalty-free and free to use for commercial purposes.

Pexels Great for more artsy, modern, youthful, and *inclusive photos (see more about stock photos and DEI below).

Unsplash If you are looking for nature photos or nature backgrounds, this is a great spot and sometimes some gems for people.

Nappy “Beautiful photos of Black and Brown people, for free.” Their tagline sums it up well! This is a smaller site than the first two, but their library seems to be growing every week.

Best Paid Stock Photo Sites

Canva You can actually get some free photos here, but the majority are included with the annual paid plan (as well as graphics and a whole bunch of other must-have tools to build a brand on your own).

Creative Market They recently updated their library to include a lot more diverse photos showing different body types, skin tones, physical abilities, gender expressions and more. No subscription needed. Photos usually cost from $5-$10 each.
